This exhibition, the first retrospective devoted
to Lyonel Feininger in North America in almost fifty years,
will offer a comprehensive panorama of the oeuvre of this
American artist who lived most of his life in Germany, from
his early satirical cartoons, comic strips, hand-made wood
figures and little-known photographs, to his emblematic depictions
of carnival scenes, and architecture and seascapes. During
his career, Feininger worked as an illustrator for the Chicago
Tribune; in Paris, he discovered Cubism; and in Weimar, he
taught at the Bauhaus school, before returning to his native
New York City. A talented violinist and composer, he often
compared his art to music. Given the influential role of music
in Feininger's work, this dimension will be at the heart of
the exhibition, with the collaboration of the Arte Musica
Foundation.
This exhibition is organized by the Whitney Museum of American
Art, New York, in collaboration with the Montreal Museum of
Fine Arts, with support from the Terra Foundation and the
Museum's Volunteer Association.
